How to apply

The Course

This course provides students with a broad understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, managing behaviour and working towards responsibility for planning, assessment and delivery of learning across all subjects.

It is suitable for students working/volunteering in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools. Prospective students will need to have either completed the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or have some relevant experience of working with children. An assessor will determine suitability.

The taught session aspect of the course is delivered remotely, and therefore requires access to a laptop/computer. the practical element of the course involves observation sof practice that are carried out by the assessor.

The course requires the student to attend a placement school (either in a voluntary or employed capacity) for a minimum of two days per week. The course length is approximately 15 months (approx. 12 months for learners progressing from the Level 2 coruse); however, length of time on programme is to be agreed with an assessor based on the needs of the student.

This course is suitable for a placement in a reception class onwards. Students may also attend a school nursery class placement if agreed by an assessor. There are funded Level 3 Diploma places available.

A work placement (either employment or voluntary) with responsibilites for learning, linked to 1-1 or small groups of pupils, in a school setting is required for this qualification.
On completion of this qualification, you can gain a role supporting staff in schools.
