How to apply

The Course

Further Maths A Level can be taken in addition to the ‘single’ A Level Maths. You can take Further Maths as a fourth A Level as an AS in years one or two of your studies, or as a full A Level. It is designed for students with a particular aptitude and strong enjoyment of the subject. This subject is an excellent preparation for degree courses with a high mathematical content, which could include engineering, physics, economics and accountancy, as well as maths itself. By doing an intensive study of such an analytical subject, you will gain outstanding skills in understanding ideas from many disciplines. Many universities require an A Level in Further Maths to study Maths related subjects.

Why study Further Maths?
Mathematics is a fascinating and rewarding area of study and each student works in an atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive. Members of the Maths Team use a variety of teaching strategies, including ILT, to ensure that the experience of students is both satisfying and rewarding. The Maths facilities are excellently equipped and provide a first-class learning environment. In addition, there is an extensive support programme designed to provide extended opportunities for successful and timely help for those who need it.

What else can you do on this course?
This is not just an academic subject studied in the classroom. We try to make your learning as relevant as possible, by including visits to exhibitions and employers where you can see the real world application of your subject. Also, Further Maths students are encouraged to do the UK Maths Challenge.

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs, including two at grade 5/B (or above) and three at grade 4/C (or above) including maths and English. Maths GCSE grade 7/A (Higher Tier) is required. Students wishing to take Further Maths must also choose Maths.
We are advised by many university lecturers in Engineering that there is no better preparation for their course than the Further Pure units. Further Mathematics is also an excellent basis for a degree in Mathematics. Other students have gone on to read Law, Physics or Economics.
