Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and its popularity and appeal as an academic subject is increasing significantly. With this in mind we are offering the opportunity to study Spanish at A Level to students with a keen interest in foreign languages and who want to extend their knowledge of Spain and the Hispanic world.
Aural, reading comprehension, oral and written expression will be taught within the framework of six modules. Spanish is taught through listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the course modules provide the framework for these skills.
Themes / Topics:
AS Level (Year 1):– Theme 1: Being a young person in Spanish-speaking society (family, youth identity, education, work etc.)- Theme 2: Understanding the Spanish speaking world (culture, heritage, art, literature, social issues etc.)
A2 / Full A Level (Year 2):– Theme 3: Diversity and difference — migration, cultural identity, marginalisation, discrimination, cultural enrichment etc.- Theme 4: The Two Spains: from 1936 onwards — the Spanish Civil War, Franco’s rule, its legacy into modern Spain.
Literature and Film:– Study one film and one book, analysing themes, style, and techniques.
Independent Research Project:– Choose a topic related to Spanish-speaking countries, research using authentic sources, prepare a presentation and discussion.
Grammar & Language Structures:– Focus on advanced grammar, syntax, idioms, and accuracy.
Why study Spanish?The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.
