You will examine the role of media in shaping how we think, feel and act in an image-saturated world. The course blends academic theory with hands-on production work, giving you the chance to create your own media products while developing a deeper understanding of how media influences culture, politics and attitudes.
In the first year, you will study radio production and learn how sound communicates meaning. In the second year, you will create a short film using industry-standard software such as Final Cut Pro, applying theoretical knowledge to practical projects. Each year, outstanding student work is submitted to competitions, with previous projects exhibited at The Corner House in Manchester.
Alongside practical study, you will develop critical skills by analysing media texts, exploring representation, and debating the social, political and cultural issues raised by film, television, print and digital platforms. You will investigate questions such as: How powerful is the media? How do images influence public opinion? Why do certain voices dominate, while others are excluded? The course will challenge your assumptions and help you refine your judgement, becoming more perceptive, analytical and articulate in expressing ideas.
By the end of your studies, you will not only be able to produce creative work but also critically evaluate the impact of media on society, preparing you for further study or careers in the creative industries.
The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.
