During first year students will study two topics, the USA 1865-1920 and Modern Britain1951-1979. The modules will focus on key USA themes including the effects of the Civil War, African Americans, immigration and entry into WW1.British themes include changes in government, class, youth culture, foreign relations and Northern Ireland
In year two, students return to the second parts of the topics studied and America will be continued from 1920, with prohibition, the Great Depression, WW2, Civil Rights and the Cold War. This will be followed by Britain, with the role of Thatcher, the Falklands, the Cold War, New Labour, multiculturalism, and the war on terror. Students will also engage in second year with an independent piece of coursework which deals with The Crusades and the clash of people, faith and ideals of Christianity and Islam between 1095-1291.
The course provides a fascinating insight into key periods of British, American and Medieval history, looking at major events that have shaped the fortunes of these interweaving nations in America and Britain and how the legacy of the Crusades can be seen into the present day.
Teaching of the course takes a range of approaches which make the course both enjoyable and accessible, whilst giving students key skills that can be transferred to further studies at university or the workplace, such as independent research, note taking, debate, the use of evidence and extended essay writing. Delivery uses techniques such as group presentations, crime scene investigation, court room debate, speed dating and independent research. Overall, the course allows students to combine a love of history with the chance to learn about key events over a two hundred year period from three areas.
The course structure is set out below. We assume you have no knowledge of these historical periods. The A level is a two-year course and you take your exams at the end of year two.
The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.
