How to apply

The Course

Who makes the law and who really has power? What happens when rights conflict? How do we decide what is fair and just? A Level Law gives you the chance to explore the rules that shape society and question how well they work in practice.

You will learn how to analyse, interpret and challenge the law with confidence. This course suits students who enjoy working with complex ideas and are comfortable questioning different viewpoints. You will develop the ability to think logically, build clear and well-supported arguments, and assess legal problems in a structured way. These are valuable skills that can support progression into law, business, politics and a range of professional careers.

You will study a range of legal areas and apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Assessment:

Assessment is through a linear qualification, with all exams taken at the end of the course. You will complete three written exams, each lasting two hours.

Paper 1 covers the English Legal System and Criminal Law. Paper 2 focuses on the English Legal System and Tort Law. Paper 3 explores the English Legal System and Human Rights Law.

English Legal System:

Understand how the law works in practice, including the role of judges, legal personnel, juries and magistrates. You will explore the rule of law, access to justice, funding and alternative ways to resolve disputes.

Criminal Law:

Study serious offences such as murder and manslaughter, as well as property offences including theft and robbery. You will also look at attempts, non-fatal offences such as battery and grievous bodily harm, and key defences including intoxication, self-defence and insanity.

Tort Law:

Explore civil responsibility and liability, including negligence, occupiers’ liability and private nuisance.

Human Rights Law:

Learn about fundamental rights such as the right to life, liberty, privacy and freedom of expression, and how these rights are protected in the UK and internationally.

Beyond the classroom, you will have opportunities to take part in enrichment activities that help you build confidence and develop your communication skills. You can lead and take part in the student-led Advocacy Society, enter funded Oracy and Essay Prize competitions, and represent the college in national competitions such as Young Citizens Bar Mock Trials and Rotary Youth Speaks. These experiences help you develop your voice and gain valuable real-world experience.

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs, including two at grade 5/B (or above) and three at grade 4/C (or above) including maths and English. You will also need a grade 5 in English Language GCSE or another written subject.
Law is a desirable subject in the legal sector and public services. Students are able to progress through to university in Law, Criminology, or Political Science or enter employment in legal administration or public sector roles.
