How to apply

The Course

Prepare for a career in the construction industry or progress to higher-level study with the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction Management. This Level 5 course develops the knowledge, practical understanding and professional skills needed to take on greater responsibility within construction management. You will explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of the industry while developing the confidence to solve problems, make informed decisions and respond to the challenges of modern construction projects.

Topics include:

• Construction management principles
• Problem solving and decision making
• Construction theory and practice
• Critical evaluation
• Professional responsibility
• Specialist construction knowledge
• Business and construction environments
• Progression to Level 6 study

Throughout the course, you will apply your learning to a range of construction scenarios, developing your ability to analyse information, evaluate solutions and make decisions in complex situations. You will build specialist knowledge in construction management while understanding how these principles apply across the wider construction and business sectors.

The course encourages independent thinking and develops the professional skills required by employers, including responsibility, critical analysis and effective decision making. By combining academic study with practical application, you will gain the confidence to perform effectively within your chosen area of construction management.

On successful completion, you will have a strong understanding of your specialist subject and be well prepared to progress to Level 6 study or move into employment within the construction industry.

The HND is available for students who wish to progress from a HNC at Cheshire College. If you have obtained your HNC from another institution or have had a gap in your studies your application will be reviewed to ensure you have previously undertaken a combination of units that is complementary to our HND programme.

We welcome an application profile that meets one of the following:

  • A Level 4 qualification in Construction
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject
  • Other related Level 4 qualifications
    An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience as determined at interview with the Course Team Leader
  • An international equivalent of the above

and:

  • GCSE grades A* to C (9 to 4) in maths and English

You could progress into employment in the industry or undertake further study. The Construction Management HND is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant construction-related courses, for example:

  • BSc (Hons) in Construction Management
  • BA and BSc (Hons) in Construction
  • BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management
  • BSc (Hons) in Construction Engineering Management

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.

Funding for Adult Courses

You may see a fee attached to the course you’re interested in, but if you are 19+ there may be funding options available to cover the cost of your course.

There is funding available for eligible students.

Do I pay this fee?

Higher Education courses such as HNCs and HNDs can be self-funded through a payment plan. However, for eligible students, a tuition fee loan can fund your course through Student Finance England and you may be eligible for a maintenance loan to support your education.

Please note, you should apply for your loan before the course starts. You only commit to the loan once you begin attending the course.
