How to apply

The Course

T Levels are new two-year, Level 3 study programmes combining classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to make sure students have real experience of the workplace.

At the end of the T Level, students are expected to demonstrate threshold competence, which means that they have gained the core knowledge and skills and are well placed to develop full occupational competence with additional development and support once in employment in the construction and building services sector. You will learn about the following topics:

Building Services Engineering (Core Units):

  • Health and safety in construction
  • Construction science principles
  • Construction design principles
  • Construction and the built environment industry
  • Construction sustainability principles
  • Construction measurement principles
  • Building technology principles
  • Construction information and data principles
  • Relationship management in construction
  • Digital technology in construction
  • Construction commercial/business principles
  • Building Services Engineering (BSE) systems
  • Maintenance principles
  • Tools, equipment and materials

Electrotechnical Engineering (Occupational Specialism):

  • Health and safety practices associated with carrying out electrotechnical systems engineering
  • Installation methods and termination of connections
  • Systems and products used in electrotechnical engineering
  • Analysing and using information to and from electrotechnical systems
  • Removal processes as part of system decommissioning

Plumbing Engineering (Occupational Specialism):

  • Fundamental health and safety practices associated with carrying out plumbing work
  • Plumbing tools and equipment
  • Pipework materials, installation methods and jointing processes
  • Plumbing systems and their purpose
  • Plumbing science
  • Principles of measurement and marking out components and pipework

Heating Engineering (Occupational Specialism):

  • Fundamental health and safety practices associated with carrying out heating engineering work
  • Heating engineering tools and equipment
  • Pipework technology
  • Heating systems
  • Heating engineering science
  • Regulations, legislation and industry guidance used in the heating industry

The course will be approximately four days per week at College with an additional 45 days of work placement across the two-yearprogramme.As part of the programme, you will also gain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card, which is a requirement of some contractors to prove you have the correct qualifications to undertake the job and is often a prerequisite to getting the job.

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C (or above), including grade 4/C (or above) for maths and English.
This qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the building services engineering industry, which will prepare students to enter the industry through employment or as an apprentice as b building services engineer, electrotechnical engineer, plumbing & heating engineer, building project manager or building services designer. Over your T Level journey you will gain a range of skills and substantial experience of working for employers, which will give you a number of progression options including degree programmes at university, skilled employment in more senior roles or higher-level apprenticeships that offer honours degrees as part of the programme.

Adults can enrol for FREE

You may see a fee attached to the course you’re interested in, but if you’re aged 19+ you’ll more than likely be eligible to enrol onto an adult course for FREE.
