The construction sector is one of the largest in the UK economy, employing 3.1 million people or over 9% of the workforce. The industry has experienced sustained growth over the past few years and is projected to grow by 8.5% and be worth £237 billion by 2024, so now is a better time than ever to consider a career in the industry.

There are many roles to choose from in construction from skilled tradespeople working on small installations to those aspiring to management and supervisory positions working on large-scale construction projects. Our tutors have many years’ experience of working in industry, and you will benefit from our real working environments where you can practise your skills and gain the experience you need to start your career.

Step Forward

Step into Employability – This course focuses on the different employability skills that can support you in securing a job. You will learn about the different ways to search for a job, produce a professional CV and how to approach different interview techniques that are used by a wide range of employers. 

Award in Construction Skills (Carpentry & Joinery) – This course focuses on an introduction to the carpentry skills required in the construction industry. You will learn about health and safety in construction, fixing architraves and skirtings and constructing sub mortice and tenon joints. 

Award in Construction Skills (Bricklaying) – This course focuses on an introduction to the bricklaying skills required in the construction industry. You will learn about health and safety in construction and how to construct half brick walling. 

Award in Construction Skills (Plastering) – This course focuses on an introduction to the plastering skills required in the construction industry. You will learn about health and safety in construction, how to correctly prepare background surfaces and apply render coats. 

Award in Construction Skills (Painting & Decorating) – This course focuses on an introduction to the painting and decorating skills required in the construction industry. You will learn about health and safety in construction and the different painting techniques currently used. 

Navigate the Jobs Market – This course follows on from the Level 1 Employability Skills Programme. We will focus in more detail on the importance of understanding what online profiles are, effective job searching and the different ways to apply for a job in a confident and professional manner. 

NVQ Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery – This course is focused on providing the introductory knowledge and skills in carpentry and joinery. Once you have completed this course, you will be able to progress on to becoming skilled in the trade, or to progress through to an Apprenticeship. In order to complete this qualification, you must either volunteer or work in a suitable setting to support your learning. 

NVQ Diploma in Plumbing – This course is focused on the basic plumbing training required if you wish to begin working within the industry. In order to complete this qualification, you must either volunteer or work in a suitable setting to support your learning. 

NVQ Diploma in Bricklaying – This course is focused on the basic bricklaying training required if you wish to begin working within the industry. In order to complete this qualification, you must either volunteer or work in a suitable setting to support your learning. 

Step Up

Introduction to First Aid – This course looks at the main focus for first aid which is to save lives, prevent an injury or illness from worsening, or to help speed recovery. First aid for cardiac arrest, choking, internal bleeding, minor wounds, and minor soft tissue injuries are also covered in this course. 

First Aid Programme – This course is a mixture of both practical and theory. You will learn how to examine a casualty, use a defibrillator, familiarise yourself with basic life support and learn how to control bleeding and trauma. 

Health and Safety Award – This course focuses on introducing the basic principles of health and safety, including hazards and risks within the workplace. 

Prepare to Deliver Excellent Customer Service – This course covers the basic elements of how to deliver an excellent customer service experience. You will learn how to deal with queries and problems in a professional manner, communicate appropriately with customers and understand the current legislation and regulations within hospitality organisations. 

GDPR Induction – This course focuses on the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that came into effect in Europe on 25th May 2018. By completing the course, you will gain a greater understanding of GDPR, including how to apply its principles in your work and how it safeguards the rights of individuals in relation to data collection and management. 

Manual Handling Safety at Work – This course looks to support employees responsible for transporting heavy loads by hand (including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving). You will also learn how to carry out comprehensive manual handling risk assessments in the workplace. 

Stress Management – This course will provide you with the knowledge required to fully understand the impact stress can have and the key issues surrounding stress. It will raise your awareness of the harmful effects stress can have on individuals and those closest to them. The course is ideal if you would like more information on this subject for personal reasons, or if you would like to work with and support individuals with stress. UK employers reported that 12.5 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2016/17, therefore learning to manage stress can have a significant, positive effect on your mental well-being. 

Building Stakeholder Relationships using Effective Communication – The focus of this course is to identify and understand stakeholders’ needs, know the purpose and benefits of building relationships with different stakeholder groups, and the methods of communicating with them to achieve results. 

COSHH Risk Assessment – This course is for anyone who has to carry out Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessments in the workplace. You will learn how to identify risks and the control measures needed, and ensure that staff understand how to work safely with hazardous substances. 

Leading and Motivating a Team – This course will look at the knowledge required to understand how to lead and motivate a successful team. You will learn how to effectively communicate, different motivational techniques and different ways to develop your team.
