Useful Information

When you come to Cheshire College for your English or Maths assessment, we use it to understand where you’re most comfortable and what course will help you grow with confidence. You may be offered an:

Entry Level Course

Entry level courses are the starting point and focus on everyday reading, writing and numeracy. They’re ideal if you want to build confidence with the basics for a strong foundation before moving on.

Functional Skills Course

Functional Skills sits above entry level and is all about using English or Maths in real situations. You’ll learn practical skills you can use at work, in further study or in day to day life. It’s a flexible option and can help you progress quickly.

GCSE Course

GCSE is the most advanced option and explores English or Maths in much greater detail. It gives you a well recognised qualification that many employers and colleges look for. If you’re aiming for specific careers, further study or simply want a stronger academic foundation, GCSE can help you reach those goals.

After you apply, we’ll invite you to Campus for a quick and relaxed assessment. This won’t be a test you need to prepare for, it simply helps us understand your current skills and confidence level. Once we have this, we can guide you towards the course that’s the best fit, whether that’s entry level, Functional Skills or GCSE.

We do this so you can start in the right place and learn at a pace that feels comfortable whilst getting the most out of every session. If you ever have questions about your course options, our team is always happy to help.

If you’re not looking to take on a full qualification right now, starting with an entry level course can be a really helpful first step. These courses are ideal if you want to refresh your English or Maths after some time away from studying, without the pressure of committing to GCSE or Functional Skills straight away.

Entry level focuses on practical, everyday skills, helping you rebuild your understanding and confidence at a steady pace. You’ll revisit the basics, get comfortable with key concepts and ease yourself back into learning in a relaxed and supportive environment.

It’s a simple and flexible way to get back on track, and once you’ve found your feet, you can choose whether you’d like to progress to a higher level. And if you’re unsure what comes next, our team is always here to help you decide.

Improving your English and Maths can open the door to new opportunities. Our Adult GCSE and Functional Skills courses help you build the qualifications and confidence needed to take the next step, whether that is progressing onto a Level 3 course, starting an apprenticeship, or applying for jobs that require a minimum standard of English and Maths. With support from experienced tutors and flexible study options, you can develop the skills employers and universities are looking for while working towards your future goals.
