Our English courses are designed for adult students of all abilities, whether you want to improve your confidence, develop your career opportunities or prepare for further study. Our friendly and experienced lecturers will help you strengthen the English skills needed for education, work and everyday life.
At Cheshire College, adults can study GCSE or Functional Skills English. After applying, you will be invited to Campus for an assessment, which helps us identify the course and level that is right for you.
Topics include:
GCSE English runs from September to early June. Throughout the course, you will explore and analyse different texts, discuss topics and issues from the world around you and develop your writing and communication skills. The course is assessed through examinations at the end of May and beginning of June, with support from our English lecturers to help you prepare.
Functional Skills English provides a practical approach to developing the reading, writing and communication skills used in everyday life and the workplace. Courses are available at different levels, allowing you to develop your skills and progress as your confidence and ability grow.
Entry Level 3 runs from September to December, with an opportunity to complete the assessment in December. Successful students can then progress to the Level 1/2 course beginning in January.
Level 1/2 Functional Skills English also begins in September and runs throughout the academic year, with the first assessment opportunity in March. A January intake is also available.
Classes are available during the daytime and evening and take place in an inclusive, friendly and supportive environment.
The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.

Do I pay this fee?
Higher Education courses such as HNCs and HNDs can be self-funded through a payment plan. However, for eligible students, a tuition fee loan can fund your course through Student Finance England and you may be eligible for a maintenance loan to support your education.
Please note, you should apply for your loan before the course starts. You only commit to the loan once you begin attending the course.
