What started as a supported internship has led to a life-changing first step into the world of work for Cheshire College – South & West student Molly Jones, who has now secured permanent employment at Lauren Court Care Home in Chester.
Eighteen-year-old Molly, has been offered a permanent position as a Wellbeing Coordinator at Lauren Court Care Home in Chester following the completion of the College’s Grow and Achieve Together Supported Internship Programme.
The supported internship programme gives young people with additional learning needs the opportunity to build confidence, develop workplace skills and gain valuable experience with local employers, supported throughout by specialist learning coaches.
Recognising her commitment, enthusiasm and natural ability to connect with residents, Lauren Court has since offered Molly a permanent role as a Wellbeing Coordinator.
Lauren Court’s Home Manager, Racheal Ashman commented:
“When Molly first came to Lauren Court, she was a shy and anxious girl. We worked with Molly and her coaches, making slight adjustments whenever we came across barriers. Within a few months, she became a positive presence in our home, loved and supported by us all. She was wonderful with our residents, and I made the decision to employ her because we couldn’t imagine her not being here. Our job is to bring joy to our residents, no matter what your role, and Molly brought this in abundance. I am thrilled that we were able to be a part of this.”
Molly said:
“I can’t actually believe I am working in a role I had always aspired to. I never thought this would happen. I love it at Lauren Court. At first, I needed support, but now I come in on my own and get on with things. It’s great.”
Ruth Szolkowska, Vice Principal Innovation, Curriculum and Quality at Cheshire College – South & West, added:
“We are passionate about helping every student develop the confidence, skills and independence they need to succeed beyond College. We are incredibly proud of Molly’s achievements and grateful to Lauren Court for recognising her talents and investing in her future. This is a brilliant example of what strong partnerships between education and employers can achieve.”
Supported Internships combine workplace experience with personalised coaching to help young people with additional learning needs progress into sustained employment. Working in partnership with employers across the region, Cheshire College continues to create opportunities that enable learners to build confidence, develop independence and achieve successful careers.
