THE NEWS AT CHESHIRE COLLEGE:

History Made as Cheshire College Apprentice Becomes First in UK to Complete Foundation Apprenticeship

June 30, 2026

Cheshire College – South & West apprentice Louie McNabb, from the Wirral has become the first person in the UK to complete a Foundation Apprenticeship, marking a significant milestone for technical education and apprenticeships.

Louie has completed his Engineering and Manufacturing apprenticeship with Teledyne UK Ltd and, following the introduction of the Foundation Apprenticeship in August 2025, has achieved the pioneering qualification, becoming the first apprentice nationally to successfully complete the programme.

Foundation Apprenticeships were introduced to provide young people with a high-quality route into skilled employment while helping employers develop future talent. Combining technical training with valuable workplace experience, the programmes are designed to support progression into full occupational apprenticeships and long-term careers in industry.

Louie’s achievement not only represents a personal success but also demonstrates the potential of Foundation Apprenticeships to help employers build skills pipelines and address future workforce needs.

Reflecting on his achievement, Louie said:

“Being the first in the country to complete a Foundation Engineering and Manufacturing Apprenticeship is a major milestone. I’m proud to have shown that this route builds strong technical skills, provides valuable industry experience and develops confidence in the workplace.”

“The journey was challenging but rewarding; it taught me about time management, resilience, and the importance of support. I’m excited for the opportunities ahead, as this is just the beginning.

Following the successful completion of his Foundation Apprenticeship, Louie is now progressing onto a Level 3 apprenticeship, continuing his development within the engineering sector.

Louie also praised the support offered to him throughout his apprenticeship journey.

“Cheshire College has been incredibly supportive from day one. They delivered clear teaching and resources that helped me understand engineering theory and apply it in the workplace. Their ongoing support and regular check-ins were key to my success. I’m very grateful.”

Helen Nellist, Deputy CEO and Deputy Principal, Cheshire College – South & West commented:

“Louie’s achievement is outstanding and a testament to the commitment and professionalism he has shown throughout his apprenticeship. Becoming the first person in the UK to complete a Foundation Apprenticeship is a remarkable accomplishment and one he should be immensely proud of.”

“This milestone demonstrates the value of Foundation Apprenticeships in developing future talent. As employers continue to face recruitment and skills challenges, programmes such as this provide a practical route into skilled employment while helping businesses build their future workforce.”

Cheshire College works with employers across the region to develop future talent through apprenticeships, helping businesses address skills needs while creating career opportunities for local people. To find out more about apprenticeship opportunities for both apprentices and employers, visit www.ccsw.ac.uk/apprenticeships
