Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair student at Cheshire College – South & West, Alfie, has taken a significant step towards a career in the automotive industry after completing work placement with Royal Mail.
The placement provided valuable exposure to real industry environments, enabling Alfie to apply his technical knowledge in a professional setting. During the placement, Alfie completed work across a range of vehicles, from vans to HGVs, supporting his development as he works towards a future career in the automotive industry.
Choosing Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
I chose to study Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at Cheshire College because I have a passion for engines and wanted to learn more about how cars work. I’ve always been interested in the automotive industry, and I’m interested in working in this field once I have qualified from my college course.
Securing Industry Experience
I secured my work experience placement by applying through an opportunity on the Royal Mail website. It took around three weeks for the placement to be confirmed, and I completed three full days of work experience. Overall, I found the process simple and straightforward.
Applying Learning in the Workplace
During my placement, I worked across a range of vehicles including vans and HGV’s. I carried out tasks such as checking tyre treads, working on DPFs, completing a full service on a larger van, and doing electrical work on the HGV.
I really enjoyed being able to service the van because I got the chance to do a bit of everything that I have learnt through my course so far and apply it in a real working environment.
Developing Skills and Confidence
Through my course and work experience, I have developed my communication and teamwork skills. I have also become more independent, both in my studies and in key areas of my day-to-day life.
Impact of College and Work Experience
My time at Cheshire College and my work experience has helped me develop key skills needed for employment, allowing me to grow professionally and build my knowledge of the automotive industry.
Career Plans and Advice
After finishing my course, I would like to secure an apprenticeship in the industry next year or return to study Level 3 Motor Vehicle at Cheshire College.
My advice to new students is that college is a great place to gain the skills you need for the future, but you need to put the effort in to get to where you want to be.
