From Workshop to Race Track: Isaac’s Journey into Motorsport Engineering

After completing a Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (IMI) at Cheshire College – South & West, Isaac Wood has turned his passion for vehicles into a clear pathway toward a career in motorsport engineering.

His time at College built strong foundations in technical skills that are essential for success in the automotive and motorsport industries.

Below, Isaac shares his experience in his own words and reflects on how College shaped his journey into degree-level motorsport.

Building Skills in the Workshop

One of the biggest strengths of the Motor Vehicle course for me was its practical, project-based approach. Working in teams to strip down vehicles, diagnose faults, and repair inoperative cars wasn’t just about developing technical skills, it was about learning how to work effectively with others under pressure.

Through these projects, we naturally stepped into leadership roles, improved our communication, and built professional relationships that genuinely reflect real-world automotive and motorsport environments.

Support That Helped Shape My Direction

Tutorial sessions, especially during my Level 3 year, played a big part in shaping my future plans. With the support of my PDTs and the Careers team, my academic goals became much clearer and more achievable.

The one-to-one sessions really stood out. They felt like a space where I was genuinely listened to, and where issues were acted on quickly.

Stepping into the World of Motorsport

I’m now in my first year of a BSc (Hons) in Competition Car Technology at Myerscough College & University Centre, which is now allowing me to move within the Motorsport world, taking me into a more technical role.

Degree-level study has already opened doors to real motorsport experiences, including attending events such as the Neil Howard Stages at Oulton Park. There, we worked as a team supporting and maintaining two Mk.2 new-build Escort rally cars, each valued at around £200,000.

Myerscough also has strong industry links, creating exciting future prospects within major motorsport series such as Formula 1, WRC, and WEC. Partnerships with organisations like M-Sport, who take on a small number of students each year in an apprenticeship-style training role, really show how connected the course is to the industry.

Skills That Carry Forward

The course gave me strong industry skills, which are vital in any trade. Progressing onto degree-level motorsport has been much easier because of what I learned at College.

The knowledge I gained has allowed me to apply for and secure interviews in garages, which helps increase my earning potential while I’m at university.

Support from other departments, like Maths, also played a big role. Retaking GCSEs and achieving higher grades first time helped me stay on track academically and move forward with confidence

My advice would be to make the most of everything on offer.

Advice for Future Students

Use open evenings to explore your options and speak to different departments. Cheshire College has modern facilities, knowledgeable staff, and loads of opportunities if you’re willing to put yourself out there. Take extra courses, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to engage.

The Motor Vehicle department, PDTs, and Careers team all work together to help you find the right direction.
