Exam Support at College

We know that exams can feel like a big milestone, especially when you’re starting to think about what comes next after school and moving on to College.

If your GCSEs are just around the corner, you’re probably feeling excited, nervous, or maybe a bit of both, and that’s totally normal! We’re here to wish you good luck and share some helpful tips to support you through exam season.

We’ll also explain the support you can access during exams and assessments at College, so you know what help is available and what to expect during your time with us.

Our Top Exam Tips

  • Stay organised: Start by planning your revision for each subject and breaking it down into manageable chunks. Set realistic goals for your revision, as even small and consistent study sessions can make a big difference.
  • Find what works for you: Everyone learns differently, so experiment with different ways of revising. Try mind maps, flash cards, quizzes, or group study sessions to see what works best for you.
  • Take care of yourself: Don’t forget to look after your wellbeing while you’re studying. Try to get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when you need them.
  • Ask for help: If you’re worried or need some extra support, asking questions or reaching out for advice can help you to feel more confident about your exams.

What are Exam Access Arrangements?

At school, you may have received extra support during exams or assessments for a variety of reasons. These adjustments are known as Exam Access Arrangements and can include support such as extra time, a reader or scribe, rest breaks, use of a laptop, a smaller room, coloured papers, noise-reduction aids, or other adjustments to help you perform at your best.

If you’ve received any of this support at school, you may be able to receive the same support during your exams and assessments at College.

To make sure the right support is in place, please ask your school for proof of your Exam Access Arrangements before you leave. This should include a Form 8 or Form 9

Please bring this evidence to enrolment and share it with our Additional Learning Support (ALS) Team, who will work with the Exams Team to ensure everything is ready for your exams and assessments.

If your school is unable to provide a Form 8 or Form 9, please ask for a letter or printed email from your school’s SENCO or Exams Officer confirming your previous arrangements. If you have any questions, you can email our Additional Learning Support Team at als@ccsw.ac.uk to request more information or advice.

Knowing What to Expect at College

At Cheshire College, exams and assessments are designed to help you show what you’ve learned during your course. Depending on your course, your knowledge and skills might be assessed through:

  • Written exams
  • Practical exams
  • Portfolios of work that are compiled throughout the year
  • Coursework and practical assignments
  • Or a combination of practical/written exams and coursework

These different methods give you the chance to demonstrate your strengths in the way that works best for your course.

What should I do if I’m worried about exams or coursework?

If you ever feel stuck, unsure, or need advice on how to prepare for exams or assessments, help is always available. Your lecturers and Personal Development Tutor (PDT) can offer personalised guidance to support you with exams, coursework, or assessments, so you can feel confident and ready to succeed on the day.

Remember, exams and assessments are just one step in your journey. With preparation, support, and self-care, you can tackle them with confidence. You’ve got this!
