Support and Help…

Whilst you are at Cheshire College – South & West, we will do our best to support you to ensure you are successful.

We can offer help and support whatever your needs are or we can refer you to external agencies and specialists to ensure your needs are met.

Our Learning Support Team have a wealth of experience and knowledge in helping students who have physical and learning difficulties.

Specialist staff work closely with our learners, both in groups and on an individual basis.

We have a team of fully trained counsellors who are available to talk to if you have something to discuss and don’t feel you can talk to anyone else.

CAREERS SERVICE

Cheshire College – South & West is committed to ensuring that all learners receive the very highest level of support, from initial enquiry, through to successful completion and moving on to university, training or employment. Our Careers team offer a client-centred, confidential, impartial and accessible service, delivered by professional and highly qualified staff and across all three Campuses. If we can help you in anyway, we will. Our services are open to anyone, you don’t have to be a current student to book an appointment with the team. All full-time students have the opportunity to book an appointment with the team at any stage during their studies and also have support on-programme through their Personal Development Tutors where they are encouraged to explore their career options, to create a CV and to develop their employability skills. We also invite in guest speakers to inspire and challenge our students aspirations including talks from curriculum-related employers, universities, the apprenticeship Talent Pool and many more. We also have our annual Careers and Employment Fair held to celebrate National Careers Week in March.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING & SUPPORT

The College recognises that high quality support is an essential part of learner success. Learners on courses at all levels are entitled to learning support to help develop the skills, behaviour and attitudes to achieve their full potential and succeed in their academic goals. The Learner Services team can help you improve all the skills you need for study such as literacy and numeracy, essay writing, managing your time, understanding complicated tasks as well as boosting your motivation and achievements. We encourage learners to tell us about identified or possible support needs when they apply. The information is treated in the strictest confidence and only shared with relevant people. The main point of contact will be a key worker who is there to give ongoing support, advice and encouragement. They will negotiate a support plan with you and your tutors and may also liaise with external agencies on your behalf. Your key worker can arrange taster days on selected courses and transition programmes to help you familiarise yourself with college life

- Deafness / Hearing Loss

If you inform us you are deaf or have a hearing loss that will impact on your learning, a member of the Learner Services Team will contact you to discuss any support needs. Types of support we can offer include:

- Dyslexia/Dyspraxia

If you inform us you are dyslexic or dyspraxic our Specialist Coordinator will contact you to discuss any support needs you might have. We will need a copy of your previous statement or dyslexia assessment report. If you have not been assessed in the past but suspect that you might be dyslexic, diagnostic interviews, computerised screening tests and standardised paper based tests are available for specialist assessments. These will provide evidence of need for special exam arrangements, awareness to tutors and application for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) before going to university. Support on your chosen course can include:

- Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

If you inform us you have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) then our Inclusive Learning Advisor (ASD) will contact you to discuss any support needs you might have. Before you enrol we can arrange:

- Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and Mental Well-Being

If you inform us you have an emotional or mental health difficulty our Specialist Coordinators will contact you to discuss any support needs you might have. These may include anxiety, ADHD, psychosis, depression, bi-polar or self-harm. Our goal is to enable students to succeed and get the most from their chosen course during their time at College. Types of support we can offer include:

 

- Learning Difficulties, Physical Disabilities and Medical Needs

If you inform us that you may require support our Inclusive Learning Advisor will contact you to discuss any support needs you might have. Support can include:

 

- Visual Impairment

If you inform us you have a visual impairment that will impact on your learning, our Inclusive Learning Advisor (Sensory) will contact you to discuss any support needs you might have. Types of support we can offer include:

 

HEALTH & WELLBEING

The College promotes good health and wellbeing and there are a number of services to support students during their time at College: Counselling The Counselling Service offers one-to-one sessions and drop-ins to any student who needs confidential, professional support with personal issues. The service operates during term time, Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 4:30pm. All counsellors are members of the BACP and abide by their Code of Ethics and Practice. Appointments can be made by dropping into the Wellbeing Centre at the Crewe Campus, or by approaching a Tutor/Personal Development Tutor, who can refer you for an appointment.


Stop Smoking Staff responsible for health and wellbeing can refer to Cheshire East’s Stop Smoking Advisor who can offer help and support to staff and students who want to give up smoking, including prescribing Nicotine Replacement Therapy (e.g. patches, chewing gum, etc.). Personal Development Tutors can refer students to this service.


Sexual Health The College offers a sexual health and advice service through partnerships with other agencies, and there are identified times where students can access advice on all aspects of sexual health, including contraception, testing for sexually-transmitted infections, pregnancy testing and sexuality/gender issues. SAFEGUARDING

Cheshire College considers the Safeguarding of our learners to be of the utmost importance. We work with many external agencies to ensure that we respond appropriately and effectively to any concerns raised by students and staff. Safeguarding encompasses students’ health and safety, welfare and well-being, and means:

PDT (Personal Development Tutors)

All full time learners who are aged between 16-18 will be assigned a Personal Development Tutor (PDT) who will guide their academic and well-being in college through tailored and individual support. PDT teams are located in accessible, central locations on each campus and work with other support services to provide a holistic approach in the development of each student. PDTs quickly develop a strong rapport with their students and ensure that any barriers to learning are effectively removed giving learners the optimum chances to have a successful and fulfilling time at College.
