The Course

Our Art & Design Practice course is an exciting and challenging option that will help you develop your creative skills further in industry standard studios and workshops. This course is the first year of a 2-year programme. The course has three pathways to choose from.

Art (Crewe or Chester Campuses)

Do you have artistic flair and want a career that makes the most of your talents? This pathway could be your next step. It will give you the opportunity to gain experience working in a variety of specialist areas and prepare you in the best possible way for work and/or higher education. You’ll expand your skills and creativity and develop an understanding of the work of other artists and designers and how these can help inspire your own approaches to your work. The final part of the course will give you the chance to design a project working in your chosen specialism with your own ideas and themes. You will exhibit this project in the College End of Year Show. The course will help you develop your knowledge through practical projects, gallery visits, essays, workshops and residentials.

You course will include the following projects:

Year 1

  • Sep-Dec Project 1- Studio & Workshop project 50% art, drawing and painting workshops and 50% textile/fashion workshops
  • Jan-March Project 2 - Urban project - you can choose which medium to work in from now on - either art based, textile/fashion based or a combination of both
  • March-Jun Project 3 Final Major Project (FMP) with public exhibition - either art based, textile/fashion based or a combination of both

Year 2

  • Sep-Dec Project 1- Production - you can choose to produce either set design, props or costumes for the client's touring production 
  • Jan-Jun. Project 2 FMP with public exhibition - you can choose which medium to work in - either art based, textile/fashion based or a combination of both

Graphics (Crewe Campus only)

What is Graphic Design? Graphic designers/graphic artists plan, analyse and create visual solutions to communications problems, generate and define concepts, research and explore art and style. They decide the most effective way of getting a message across in print, electronic and film media, using a variety of methods, such as colour, type, illustration, photography, printmaking, digital studies; Adobe Creative Suite: Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. This will also include various layout techniques. On this pathway you will work through a broad range of methods and processes that support all aspects of design and graphics for industry and higher education. You will cover a broad range of design and graphics processes and will have the opportunity to work on live client-led briefs, giving you a taste of the 'real' creative world.

In the second year, great emphasis is placed on building a successful portfolio ready for higher education or employment. The focus will be on your chosen specialist subject, resulting in a display of your final major project and best practice at the end of year course exhibition.

Photography (Crewe or Chester Campuses)

This pathway is designed to introduce you to a range of traditional wet-based photography through to digital applications. Through hands-on practical application you will produce work of a professional standard through the exploration of a range of genres including documentary, photojournalism, fine art, portraiture, fashion, landscape, commercial and advertising. Through experimentation you will be encouraged to generate imaginative ideas that are developed into final realised outcomes. You will have access to industry standard resources and software which will help prepare you for the profession. There is great emphasis on self-promotion, building a portfolio, exhibiting work and having a web presence.

You will experience working with a range of digital imaging hardware and software that will enable you to scan, manage and manipulate imagery. You will also undertake studio and location-based photography, learning lighting and exposure control. These workshops are supported by gallery visits, exhibitions, visiting photographers, location shoots and residentials.

2D + 3D Digital Game Art 
Turn your creative ideas into game-ready artwork and experiences. On 2D + 3D Digital Game Art, you’ll develop practical skills in 2D concept art, digital design, 3D modelling, texturing and game development, building a portfolio of creative work along the way.
You’ll learn to use industry-standard software including Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter and Unreal Engine, taking your ideas from initial sketches and concepts through to fully modelled, textured and playable environments and assets.
You’ll explore the creative and technical processes used by professional games artists, developing skills in areas such as character and environment design, 3D asset creation, UV mapping, materials, lighting, level design and real-time game engines. You’ll also develop your digital portfolio and professional skills to help prepare you for progression into employment, higher education or further specialist study.
The UK games industry is a major part of the creative economy. In 2025, UK consumers spent £8.76 billion on video games, an increase of 7.4% compared with the previous year. The UK games industry supports more than 73,000 jobs and contributes around £6 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UK economy.

TV and Film Production This pathway gives students the opportunity to explore a wide range of specialist roles within the moving image industry. Students will develop practical skills across areas including cinematography, production design, sound, video editing, scriptwriting, directing, and production management.In the first year, students will explore a variety of television and promotional formats, including music videos, advertising and multi-camera productions.In the second year, the focus shifts towards film production and developing a professional portfolio designed to prepare students for progression into the creative industries.Each project combines theory with hands-on production experience. Students begin by analysing existing professional productions and exploring how meaning is created through media language, before working collaboratively to plan, produce, film and edit their own projects.Throughout the course, students develop the creative, technical, organisational and communication skills needed to work effectively in a professional production environment. They will gain experience of working as part of a production team while also developing their own specialist interests and creative voice.The course is ideal for students who are passionate about film, television and digital media and who want to progress into the creative industries, pursue a career in TV and film, or continue their studies in media, film or related subjects at higher education.

Typically, you will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a 4/3 combination for Maths and English.
You could progress to employment in the industry to to a higher education course at the College. If you plan to progress to university, you will receive full support and advice from course staff in your application to university and in the preparation and presentation of your university interview portfolio.

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.

You may see a fee attached to the course you’re interested in, but if you are 19+ there may be funding options available to cover the cost of your course.

Do I pay this fee?

Higher Education courses such as HNCs and HNDs can be self-funded through a payment plan. However, for eligible students, a tuition fee loan can fund your course through Student Finance England and you may be eligible for a maintenance loan to support your education.

Please note, you should apply for your loan before the course starts. You only commit to the loan once you begin attending the course.
