The Course

This course offers a practical introduction to three essential areas of digital skills: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and online safety. It is ideal if you want to build your confidence using digital technology for everyday life or the workplace.

Topics include:

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Working with data and spreadsheets
  • Excel tools and functions
  • Microsoft Word
  • Creating and formatting documents
  • Editing text and working with images
  • File naming and management
  • Online safety and privacy
  • Recognising phishing and online scams
  • Creating strong passwords
  • Safe online communication
  • Responsible online behaviour

In Microsoft Excel, you will explore tools and functions that can make working with data quicker and more efficient. This includes developing skills to organise, manage and analyse information using spreadsheets.

Microsoft Word activities cover the key features of word processing, from creating and formatting documents to editing text, adding images and using tools such as spell check. Good file naming and management practices are also covered, helping you organise and manage documents effectively.

The online safety element focuses on using digital platforms safely and responsibly. You will explore how to protect personal information, manage privacy settings and recognise common cyber threats, including phishing and scams. The course also covers password security, safe communication and responsible behaviour online.

By the end of the course, you will have developed greater confidence using Microsoft Word and Excel alongside a better understanding of how to stay safe online. These skills can support you in everyday life, further study and the workplace.

There are no formal qualifications required. An interest in developing digital and computer-based skills is recommended.
You can progress onto a Level 2 IT course or another digital short course to expand your skills.

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.

Funding for Adult Courses

You may see a fee attached to the course you’re interested in, but if you are 19+ there may be funding options available to cover the cost of your course.

Higher Education Funding

There is funding available for eligible students.

Do I pay this fee?

Higher Education courses such as HNCs and HNDs can be self-funded through a payment plan. However, for eligible students, a tuition fee loan can fund your course through Student Finance England and you may be eligible for a maintenance loan to support your education.

Please note, you should apply for your loan before the course starts. You only commit to the loan once you begin attending the course.
