At Cheshire College, work experience is a key part of your journey. Most full-time students will complete a placement alongside their course, giving you the chance to develop practical skills, explore your industry, and connect with potential employers.
It’s a great way to build confidence, strengthen your CV, and stand out when you take your first steps into the world of work.
Choosing a placement linked to your course will help you get the most from the experience and it’s never too early to start planning. Thinking ahead means you’ll be ready to hit the ground running when you join us this September.
Top tips for finding the right placement:
Start early
Begin exploring your options before your course starts. Research local employers and reach out to ask about opportunities. Many organisations are happy to hear from enthusiastic students, and you could lock in your placement way ahead of schedule.
Keep it relevant
You’ll gain the most by choosing a placement in an industry you’re passionate about, and it’s even more useful if it’s connected to what you’re studying.
Do your research
Consider what skills you want to develop and what you’ll be learning on your course. It’s also important to think about practical details like location and how you would travel to your placement.
Use your network
Family and friends can be a great starting point. If they work in your chosen field, ask if they can help you make connections or offer advice to help you get started.
We’re here to help
We encourage students to arrange their own placements where possible, but support is always available. You can email workexperience@ccsw.ac.uk or careers@ccsw.ac.uk for guidance or visit us on Campus once your course begins.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to complete a work experience placement?
It depends on your course. Work experience is compulsory for full-time Level 2 and Level 3 students. A Level students aren’t required to complete a placement, but it’s highly recommended to help boost your skills and CV.
How many work experience hours do I need to complete?
- 70 hours if you are not studying GCSE English and/or Maths
- 35 hours if you are studying GCSE English and/or Maths
Our Level 1 and A Level students are not required to complete any work experience, but we can offer lots of support and advice if you do choose to complete a placement.
If you’re on a two-year course, you’ll need to complete work experience hours each year. For example, you might need to do 70 hours in Year 1 and then a separate 70 hours in Year 2. Each year counts individually toward your total work experience requirement.
When should I arrange my placement?
You can complete work experience at any point during your course, but we recommend organising it as early as possible, so you can focus on your studies later in the year.
