The Course

This Level 3 Diploma will help you develop the advanced technical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in fabrication and welding. Building on core engineering principles, the course provides hands-on experience of industry techniques, materials, tools and equipment in a workshop environment.

Topics include:

  • MIG welding
  • TIG welding
  • Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding
  • Fabrication techniques
  • Sheet metalwork
  • Machining
  • Working with different materials
  • Engineering tools and equipment
  • Health and safety
  • Industry working practices

The course combines technical knowledge with practical workshop experience. You will develop your skills across different welding processes, including MIG, TIG and MMA, while exploring fabrication, machining and sheet metalwork.

Working with a range of materials, tools and equipment will help develop the accuracy, technical ability and confidence needed within the engineering industry. Safe working practices are embedded throughout, reflecting the standards expected in professional workshop environments.

Assessment includes practical tasks, portfolio work and written assignments. These are designed to give you opportunities to demonstrate both your technical knowledge and practical abilities in scenarios that reflect industry expectations.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a broad range of advanced fabrication and welding skills, preparing you to progress into employment, an Apprenticeship or higher-level study within engineering.

Typically you will need to have achived a grade 4/C in GCSE English and maths or a Level 2 Engineering qualification.
On successful completion of this course, a student can progress to higher-levels of Diplomas in Engineering, or into employment in the sector.

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.

Do I pay this fee?

Higher Education courses such as HNCs and HNDs can be self-funded through a payment plan. However, for eligible students, a tuition fee loan can fund your course through Student Finance England and you may be eligible for a maintenance loan to support your education.

Please note, you should apply for your loan before the course starts. You only commit to the loan once you begin attending the course.
