The Course

This Higher National Certificate and Diploma in Applied Science – Biology is a two-year programme designed for students aiming to build a career in the science sector, with a specific focus on biological sciences. The course provides a strong foundation in core biological topics while developing analytical and research skills essential for scientific roles.

Students will study a range of units including cell biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and the fundamentals of chemistry. The programme also includes training in data handling and scientific communication, helping students apply theoretical knowledge in practical and professional contexts.

This course is suitable for those already working in the sector looking to progress, as well as those intending to pursue a science-based degree at university. Assessment is primarily through coursework and assignments. Some units may also include written tests or in-class assessments.

The HND is available for students who wish to progress from a HNC at Cheshire College. If you have obtained your HNC from another institution or have had a gap in your studies your application will be reviewed to ensure you have previously undertaken a combination of units that is complimentary to our HND programme.

We welcome an application profile that meets one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in a relevant science subject
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience as determined at interview with the Course Team Leader
  • An international equivalent of the above

and:

  • GCSE grades A* to C ( 9 to 4) in maths and English
You can progress onto a science-related degree at university or advance your career in the science industry, including roles in research, healthcare, or laboratory work.

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.
