The College, who recently announced a new five-year project ‘The Digital Hub – Stream’ which involves facilitating access to technology within the local community, has also designed a brand new fast-track course in Digital, Maths and English for adult learners to refresh their knowledge in these highly desired skill areas.
This nine-week intensive course will develop your confidence in using these skills in everyday life. Upon completion, you will gain three widely-recognised qualifications that could support you back into employment, to progress in your current role or to go onto higher-level study.
Entry Level – ECDL – Computer and Online Basics qualification is nationally-recognised. This course is an accessible computer and internet qualification for absolute beginners who have never used a computer or been online. The course covers:
- Computer Basics – understanding the basic computer parts and terminology, and how to use the computer, keyboard and mouse
- Introduction to the Desktop
- Introduction to documents
- The World Wide Web
Functional Skills Maths is also a well-recognised and popular course, and our adult Functional Skills classes often fill up with people from a wide range of backgrounds, such as nurses, paramedics, and even airline staff. Again, we understand just how inaccessible maths can sometimes feel to people, so this course is designed to remove the confusion and fear that some people feel towards the subject that has perhaps built up since leaving education years before.
Functional Skills maths leaves behind complex equations from GCSE Maths, and instead we will teach you maths skills needed in everyday life, focusing far more on real life scenarios. For example, our Functional Skills maths learners are using their new maths skills to book holidays, find the best interest rates on bank accounts, and solve real-life issues that will help them in a myriad of ways. The course is assessed with one exam, that comprises calculator and non-calculator sections and, even on the paper, questions are accessible and relate to scenarios in life you’ll have come across many times before.
Our Functional Skills English course can be broken down into three elements: Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening. The course is designed to be far more ‘functional’ than other English courses on offer, and each element will help prepare you to use ‘English’ in a more professional manner.
On the reading element of the course, our tutors will show you how to read information effectively and how to use certain techniques to ensure you do not struggle over a long piece of information. Our writing element, instead of focusing on articles or stories you may have tried to write at school, will centre around writing emails or letters, using the correct formats, punctuation, and spellings. Finally, the speaking and listening element of the course will equip you with tips and tricks about how to have effective discussions and even speak in front of small groups without fear. All of our tutors are highly experienced in working with adults and completely understand the anxieties often felt by these learners. Not only will the course give you a widely-recognised qualification, but the confidence to read, write, and speak in everyday life.
