‘Truly original thinking’

Cheshire College – South & West are working in partnership with award winning electronics and optics business, Altimex.

The College’s longstanding relationship with Altimex has significantly developed over the last few years and they are now working on numerous projects together, one being the launch of T Levels, starting at Cheshire College in September 2021.

T Levels are part of the Government’s flagship reforms to technical education in England. During the two-year programme, learners will spend 80% of their time learning and honing their skills within industry standard workshops and state-of-the-art classrooms. An additional 20% will be spent on an industrial placement with an employer.

Altimex have been instrumental in the development of the extended work placements, offering several learners an opportunity to join them at their head office and production facility in Thornton Science Park, Chester.

One learner, Aaron Shepherd, who has just finished studying Level 3 Engineering at the Colleges Ellesmere Port Campus, recently secured a part-time position at Altimex after impressing the team during his 45-day work placement.

After being involved with a wide variety of projects, Aarons current role as a Production Assistant focuses on the quality control and quality assurance aspects of the production line, enabling the wider team to develop the final products.

Aaron commented: “During my time at Altimex, I had the opportunity to develop my practical and analytical skills, alongside building my confidence and team-building skills.

“Their motto ‘truly original thinking’ is a perfect fit. The advanced technology and fully automated production allow Altimex to deliver the highest quality solutions in both electronic manufacturing and fibre optics. The team are constantly sharing their expert knowledge, which has been fundamental to my development.

“I can’t thank Davinder enough for the opportunity. I am definitely more equipped for my next step into University.”

Davinder Lotay, Managing Director at Altimex, said: “Work placements are a vital part of any study programme. They provide learners with the opportunity to enhance their learning by applying their knowledge, skills and behaviours within industry.

“Aaron was able to work on live projects for clients, working with every department to understand the product journey. This allowed him to develop his technical ability but also gain an insight into the way a company is structured and how it operates.

“Altimex works with schools, colleges and universities across Cheshire. We believe interest in STEM subjects is formed at an early age, so being able to support young people’s career aspirations is something we are extremely passionate about.”

Helen Meakin, Employer Engagement and Relationships Manager, commented: “It is a true privilege to have partnered with Altimex.

‘’We are incredibly grateful to Davinder and his team giving up their time in order to support, teach and develop our learners. It provides invaluable experiences, and we are overjoyed to be piloting our T Level placements with an award-winning business.

‘’I look forward to continuing our work with Altimex and I am excited to see how the partnership develops.’’

Cheshire College currently have over 500 partnerships with employers across the country and internationally, working in a wide range of industries, providing a number of services which are specifically aimed at benefitting businesses and learners.
