Order! Order! Commons Speaker lifts the lid on parliamentary life

Cheshire College – South & West were delighted to receive a visit from John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, on Friday 18th January.

Mr Bercow gave a hugely entertaining and informative presentation, followed by a Brexit debate and lunch in the award-winning Academy Cheshire restaurant, alongside Dhesi, Principal and CEO and Government and Politics learners at the College.

One of his key roles as a speaker is to visit different constituencies and discuss the role of Parliament and democracy with younger people. He largely discussed his career history and development, his current role as The Speaker and gave a general overview of Parliament and Democracy.

Ben Conor, Lecturer in Humanities and English, said: ‘’The entire day was an excellent opportunity for our learners to express their views and engage in democracy and debating under the keen eye of The Speaker.

‘’We had impressive feedback from Mr Bercow himself on the quality of the Brexit debate which our learners took part in, which is a credit to both the learners and academic staff here at College.’’

Mr Bercow was invited to Crewe and Nantwich by Laura Smith MP, Member of Parliament for Crewe & Nantwich, who arranged the event in conjunction with Cheshire College – South & West and Malbank School and 6th Form College. Laura commented: ‘’It was an absolute pleasure to be able to take John Bercow to the College where I myself was educated and give the learners the opportunity to meet him and test out their debating skills.

‘’As usual the young people in our community have done us proud and I hope that the experience stays with them.

‘’I am very grateful to John for taking the time during this extremely busy and historical period to come and talk to the learners and would like to thank Cheshire College – South & West for making the trip such a success.’’

It was an extremely busy week for Mr Bercow, as his visit followed two crucial votes in Parliament, Theresa May’s Brexit deal and a ‘no confidence’ vote in her leadership.

Dhesi, Principal and CEO, said: ‘’Mr Bercow’s visit has been an important day for both staff and learners across our College. It has been a fantastic opportunity for our learners to work alongside one of the most influential figures in our country and as usual they did our College and the community proud.

‘’We are incredibly grateful for the continuous support Laura offers to the College, including arranging Mr Bercow’s visit and her work speaking up about funding within Further Education.

‘’It was definitely a day to remember.’’
