22 students studying creative digital media at Cheshire College – South & West enjoyed a five-day, once in a lifetime trip to Los Angeles.
Navigating the sights of the entertainment capital of the world, students got an insight into the fast-paced and lively environment of LA, visiting some of the City’s most famous attractions.
During their time in LA, the students had a chance to check out some of the media influences and entertainment hubs the city has to offer, such as visiting Sony Studios, home to the set of ‘Jeopardy’, the famous US quiz show and the American sitcom, The Goldbergs.
Katie Parker, Media Lecturer & BTEC Level 3 Course Team Leader, said: “Visiting the Sony Studios gave the students a fantastic opportunity to learn about how the shows are filmed and produced, as well as see what goes on behind the scenes. We were also able to see the sound stages where Singin’ in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz were filmed.”
A trip down Hollywood was also the perfect chance to see 100 years’ worth of history at its famous Museum, showcasing the most extensive collection of Hollywood memorabilia in the world. Spanning across four floors, the exhibit is home to more than 10,000 authentic show biz treasures, including one of a kind costumes, props, photographs, scripts and artefacts from favourite films and TV shows, as well as sets for a range of films including Silence of the Lambs, The Big Bang Theory and Halloween.
The Creative Digital Media students also found time to visit the Walk of Fame and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where the students were lucky enough to see the preparations for the Oscars, capturing some photos with their favourite stars.
“We couldn’t have timed it better really, it was amazing to see the Oscar set-up and such a buzz to be there. Whilst we were in Hollywood, we also visited Madame Tussaud’s on Hollywood Boulevard. We managed to cram loads in as there was so much to see. It really was an amazing trip.” said Level 3 Media Student Jacob Rookes, aged 18 from Sandbach.
Amelia Sanlon, also 18 from Northwich added: “We were able to visit so many fascinating places. We did a Los Angeles film locations tour where we drove around learning about historic places in LA and where they filmed iconic film scenes – it was really interesting. It wouldn’t have been a trip to LA without seeing the Hollywood sign too, which we viewed from the Griffith Observatory. The Observatory sits on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood and commands excellent views of the sign, so is a popular tourist attraction. I had such a fantastic time and loved every second.”
Notorious for its vast beaches, the students also visited Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier for some leisurely time to enjoy the beach, shopping and the rides.
Katie added: “The trip has been really inspiring for the students and great fun. It has given them great insights, which will help to develop their creativity and also a memorable experience they can utilise. We know all the students really enjoyed their time in LA and we hope to organise another equally influential trip soon.”
