The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Level 6) / Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education - Level 5) is a two year course that is undertaken by teachers, trainers and lecturers who are already working in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Learners with a degree qualification will follow the PgCE pathway, learners who do not have a degree will follow the CertEd pathway. The course is designed to meet the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Professional Standards and has at its heart a model of Critical Reflective Practice that facilitates an ongoing professional dialogue between student, mentor and tutor.
Learners will complete the following modules:
· Year 1 (each module is worth 20 credits):
· Professional Development 1
· Introduction to Teaching in the Post-compulsory Education Sector
· Subject Specific Studies
Year 2 (each module is worth 20 credits):
· Professional Development 2
· Subject Specialism and E-Learning
· Curriculum, Policy and Practice
You will be an in-service teacher employed within the Lifelong Learning Sector and able to provide evidence of at least 150 hours of teaching practice experience over the duration of their award. This teaching should take place within a 20 mile radius of the college in order for us to be able to travel to observe you. For teachers of vocational subjects, a qualification of at least a Level 3 is required and for teachers of academic subjects a degree level qualification is the norm.
Applicants must possess at least GCSE grade C / or Grade 4 in English and have achieved or be working towards the same levels in mathematics. Other NQF level 2 qualifications in English/literacy/communication or mathematics/numeracy may be acceptable. Applicants must secure a subject specialist mentor to support them during their studies. Applicants must also produce an Enhanced DBS certificate.
On completion of the PGCE/Cert Ed you will be able to continue on to higher studies. CertEd students may wish to progress onto a BA in Education, PGCE students onto a Masters qualification.
