This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computer Games Design provides the
knowledge, understanding and technical skills for learners wishing to enter upon
a career in Computer Games Design or Development, Animation, Digital Graphics or
Special Effects Production. To create a game, you need an appreciation of how to
write code, edit images, animate in 3D, add sampled digital sound and much
more.


This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computer Games Design provides the
underpinning knowledge, understanding and technical skills for learners wishing
to enter upon a career in computer games design or development, 3D animation or
special effects production. Game design covers a wide area that includes
simulation and adventure for use in areas such as entertainment, training and
education.


If you want to do more than play games and take on the challenge of designing
and developing your own games and game resources, then this is the course for
you. You will explore games as an entertainment and educational medium, look at
the language and images and how they are used to engage the player. You will
learn how to programme, create artwork and digital graphics, develop and animate
3D environments and produce sound for games.


You will also learn how to use commercial software such as Cubase Maya and
games engines including Game Maker and Unreal Development Kit, amongst others.
As a key part of this course you will develop skills in media production
techniques alongside the games development units. Applicants must be
enthusiastic about gaming and media technology and must be able to demonstrate
both IT and creative skills.

Five GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above including Maths and English. Level 3 students who do not achieve a grade 4 in English and/or Maths will study a GCSE in the subject(s) as part of their study programme.

Successful completion of the Level 3 Computer Games Design course, along with an appropriate grade and portfolio, will provide access to a wide range of more specialist university courses and prepare students for employment in the rapidly growing games industry.
