The FdSc programme is a level 5 programme designed to appeal to students already working within the construction industry, those wishing to enter the profession or those seeking continuing professional development. The programme is designed to provide a solid and technical basis for entry into or development within the construction industry and it provides a balance between intellectual and practical skills and related opportunities to apply such learning within the workplace. The programme has been designed and developed with employer involvement in order to meet the needs of the sector. It is underpinned by three main themes:
Technology and Materials
Interdisciplinary Professional Practice
The themes were broadly developed in conjunction with employer needs and underpinning academic theory and serve to provide and a construction specific programme.
The design element of the programme encompasses a broad knowledge of design technology and its practical application to enable decision making within construction design.
The programme considers construction methods and materials relevant to the construction industry today.
The interdisciplinary professional practice element of the programme takes into consideration essential aspects of the industry such as health and safety, aspects of contract law and procurement and business and entrepreneurial features.
The themes form the core element of the programme and together they provide the basis for an academically challenging and industry relevant qualification.
What you’ll study:
You will study the following modules in the first year of study:
· Work Based Learning Project
· (Land) Surveying
· Construction Methods & design
· Construction Technology
· Environmental Design & Services
· CAD & BIM
The Foundation Degree will use the standard University of Derby admissions criteria for a Foundation Degree, but it will also recognise other routes into learning, with particular focus on experiential learning and mature students, as it is envisaged that a number of mature students will want to join the programme in order to progress their careers. Also, it is predicted that some employers will be encouraging some of their employees to enrol on the programme. The use of APCL/APELs will be encouraged in order to allow students to gain credit for prior work e.g. programme attended for work or work experience at the correct level. The University of Derby’s regulations with regard to APL/APEL will be followed in all respects in order to control and regulate the transfer of students from one programme to another.
For a full list of accepted qualifications, please follow the link to the University of Derby’s https://www.derby.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/apply/entry/ which details the qualifications we accept, alternative qualifications and what we're looking for as a partner of the University of Derby.
Any and all offers made for a place on the programme are subject to final approval by the University of Derby before beginning the course.
Whilst it is acknowledged that the majority of students on the FdSc are already in employment in the construction industry, careers advice and guidance is available at the College for all students.
If you wish to enter or change employment, you will have the skills and technical knowledge necessary to join construction companies at graduate level. Graduates should be able to take up posts within nationally recognised organisations, and should be able to acquit themselves well in a number of possible roles including site management, project design, quantity surveying and project management.
The College also offers a BSc (Hons) top up degree programme and students who successfully complete the FdSc may be considered for progression on to the degree programme.
