This BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is designed to prepare you for university or work in a range of scientific professions, and is equivalent to 3 Science A Levels. The 18 units studied are all assessed through various kinds of coursework, rather than by exams. During this varied course you will study units that focus on the Fundamentals of Science and Scientific Practical Techniques to units linked with medical science, such as Physiology of the Human Body, Microbiological Techniques and Genetics.

The course consists of 18 different units of science study split over 2 years; six core units and twelve specialist units. In the first year you will study four core units, four specialist units plus one unit on Mathematics for Scientists. In the second year one core unit and seven specialist units are studied. You can choose to focus on either Forensic Science or Laboratory and Industrial Science, depending on your preferred choice of career direction.

During the two-year programme you will also participate in several on-the-job training opportunities including Operating Theatre Live, Genetics Workshops, a Crime Scene Investigation and Conservation at Chester Zoo.

Five GCSE’s at Grade 4 (C) or above including Maths and English. Level 3 students who do not achieve a grade 4 in English and/or Maths will study a GCSE in the subject(s) as part of their study programme.
